Flora’s Bath, where I sang between Feb 2022- May 2023
I am paying forward the engaged practice of singing with ‘ecologies in distress’, ‘landscapes of madness’, ‘islands of refuge’.
This is a community-led practice for social-ecological justice. The practice applies teachings from across all sects of Buddhism to change the way in which we collectively care for each other and the more-than-human world.
A field trip is co-designed by participants. And support is given for the group to collectively decide locations they will sing with. Perhaps engaging in research, and with the wider community to guide their trip.
The group will need to choose at least one site that brings both strength and healing. And another site/s that they identify as hosting, or provoking ‘madness’ and/or ‘distress’.
Various social-ecological issues can be engaged with depending on the sites that are visited.
On location groups will be led in a singing practice that applies teachings from the Metta Sutta to bring loving kindness, friendliness, goodwill to all beings, not only human.
Intentionally meeting ‘ecologies in distress’, and ‘landscapes of madness’ for some is only possible in a supported environment. This is a practical and direct means for understanding the First and Second Noble Truth : ‘there is suffering’, and ‘there is a cause of suffering’. A bi-product is the cultivation of two inseparable, and essential qualities; wisdom and compassion.
Identifying and visiting ‘islands of refuge’. Encourages communities to share resources. And practice custodianship. Protecting that which is seen as vital.
As this practice occurs in public space. It falls within performance intervention/direct action. Creating unexpected connections. And promoting relationship building across communities.
This practice came out of studying Pansori with Master Bae Il Dong. And bringing back what was learnt to the place that I then lived (pictured above); Gundungurra and Dharug Country. Whilst in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Documentation of this practice can be found in the latest performance of ‘A Sinkless Shore’ shared here.
I offer this practice to individuals and groups.
